Brant Resource Guide #5

City of Brantford

Introduction

Brantford became a city in 1917, but was first settled 100 years earlier. It was named "Brant's Ford" because it lay at a point along the Grand River where the Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant was known to cross. It was a flourishing industrial town in the mid 19th century with both rail and Grand River canal transportation.
