United Empire Loyalists

Loyalist crest

Introduction

The title "United Empire Loyalist" or UEL was given as an acknowledgement of distinction to those American citizens who remained faithful to the Britain during the American Revolution (1775-1783). When the American colonies drew up the Declaration of Independence, about 1/3 of their citizens remained loyal to the Crown, and Britain found new homes for many of them in Canada. In 1784, the largest group of Loyalists, some 1500 Iroquois people under the leadership of Chief Joseph Brant, settled along the Grand River, east of present day Brantford.
